Beware Of The Stinging Disguise

Fire Coral: The Burning Truth

Beware of the Stinging Disguise

Fire corals (Millepora) are deceptive creatures that masquerade as ordinary corals or seaweed. These colonial marine organisms belong to the hydrocorals class, distinct from true corals. While fire corals possess similar physical attributes to corals, they conceal a hidden danger: a potent sting that can cause severe skin irritation.

The Fire Coral Sting

Unlike true corals, fire corals are sessile animals that cannot move. They rely on their stinging cells to protect themselves and capture prey. These cells contain a venom that triggers a burning sensation and skin irritation. Fire-coral-related incidents are common among divers, especially those with sensitive skin or allergies.
